Hyde Park is within MLS area 8041. It is located on the south side of Chicago. Hyde Park is bordered by 51st Street on the north, The Midway (between 59th and 60th Streets) on the south, Lake Michigan on the east, and Washington Park on the west. Just 7 miles south of The Loop, it is one of Chicago’s 77 well-defined communities.
The area began to make his mark when the University of Chicago was founded by John D. Rockerfeller. Soon after, the World’s Columbian Exposition was hosted in the area, but the only structure left today from the fair is the Palace of Fine Arts, which is known today as The Museum of Science and Industry. The University began drawing some of the most important theological schools in the country in the early 20th century. The area today is home to almost half of the accredited schools in the Chicago area. Throughout the rest of the century, the area boasted over 100 hotels, which later became condominiums and apartment buildings.
Hyde Park is home to a copious number of historic structures, educational institutions, as well having been home to many notable residents like Marshall Field, Harold Washington, and Barack Obama. Residents are attracted to the area for its easy access to transportation, its layout, where the even numbered streets are almost exclusively residential and the odd numbered streets are mostly businesses. The neighborhood has a variety of restaurants and all types of shops, ranging from dry cleaners to grocery stores to pet stores. Apartment buildings and condominiums are mostly found in the area, as well as new single-family homes. The neighborhood is considered one of the most desirable places to live in the City of Chicago.
