Edgewater

The Edgewater neighborhood is within MLS area 8028. It is located on the north side of Chicago, 7 miles from the Loop. Edgewater is bounded by Foster Avenue on the south, Devon Avenue on the north, Ravenswood Avenue on the west, and Lake Michigan on the east. It is one of the 77 official community areas of Chicago.

The area was first developed as a summer home for the elite as an independent suburb annexed to the city of Chicago. In the early 1900s it was known as one of the most prestigious communities with beautiful mansions lined along the lake front. As the affluent community grew through the early 1900s, developers expanded the area north to an area called Uptown, as well as to Andersonville, which today are considered part of the Edgewater area.

Edgewater today boasts a skyline of high-rise apartment building and condominium complexes, as well as mid-rise homes. To the west, Edgewater is characterized by commercial businesses; single family homes; and two, three, or four story flats. Residents can enjoy the several beaches during spring, summer and early autumn, as well as Chicago’s largest park, Lincoln Park.
